Patna is the capital city of Bihar, a state with a reputation as the most lawless in India. Patna has a history of large events with Maharaji. In 1985 an event was held here that drew 250,000 people. Since then, there have been a couple of events that were larger in other parts of India, including Gaya which reportedly drew 300,000 people. Gaya is also in the state of Bihar but it is not near Patna.
The people in Patna have set out to re-claim the record for largest event. They have invited over 500,000 people to the event here. Many feel that 300,000 is a more realistic number, but no one really knows how many will attend. The event is being held in a large onion field outside of town in a farming area.
The farmers are busy harvesting their crops that tomorrow would be in front of the stage on the event ground. I have been to many events in India, and none of them had such a large area prepared for guests. The event will be held in the morning to avoid the heat of mid day. The field is fragrant with the smells of rich earth and fresh red onions.
