Happiness

When you say, “I want to be happy,” what does that mean to you?

What is happiness? When I’m not caught in the hooks of tomorrow, nor being tormented by the past, when I’m lost and found in that one singularity in the moment called now where I experience passion without having to every define “for what.”

When I am in love and I am filled with love, but I don’t know the lover’s name, when I understand but I don’t know what it is that I have understood, when I have an answer in my lap but I don’t know what question it belongs to, when I am full, when I am full and I don’t know what it is that fills me, and I don’t care because I have no time. I am enveloped, swallowed whole by that moment called “now”.

Appreciation

_mbw7324There is this incredible thing called appreciation. And most people are not familiar. What does it really mean to appreciate?

We appreciate somebody opening a door for us and we go, “Thank you.” If we are lost, somebody shows us, “Oh, you just go up, turn left and 20 feet, that’s the place you want to go,” and we are like, “Oh, thank you; thank you.” We go to a restaurant, the waiter serves us nicely, he doesn’t throw things at us. Says nice things to us. To express our gratitude, we leave him a tip. We appreciate what you have done.

This power of appreciation, when it is turned for this existence, for this life - not the things that you have in this life, but the life itself. The coming and going of this breath, that, “I am alive. I exist.” That I have the capacity to feel, that I have the capacity to understand, that I  have the capacity to feel happiness in my life. That I have the capacity to be satisfied in my life. That I have the capacity to be content in my life. That I have a capacity to understand in my life. That I have the capacity to have the answers in my life.

Then, the appreciation that comes for this life is unique. And this, in my opinion, you, me, all of us, do very, very well.

The Kindness

080831_thousandoaks_l001_2 Time is time.  You can’t accelerate it, and you can't slow it down.

You are in this world.  You exist, one day you weren’t, today you are, one day you will not be.  You have heard me say this many times, but I can guarantee it – you don’t understand what it means.  I can guarantee it.  Because of the distractions.  When the time comes, that you lose the capacity to be distracted, and such a time is coming, then - and only then - do you begin to understand what life is about.

How do I know this?  Have I reached that time in my life where I am not distracted?  No.  But I also know that there is somebody kind enough to let me know this.  There is somebody kind enough that leaves a little note, “Beware.  Rock ahead.”

You see, you have to understand what this means.  The person didn’t remove the rock.  The rock is still there.  But they left a little note.  “Be careful.  There is a possibility ahead that you could tumble.”  That you could hurt yourself.  Be careful.  There is a ditch ahead.

They didn’t fill the ditch.  They just left a note.  And that is incredibly kind.  Incredibly beautiful.  And all I have to do is read those notes.  All I have to do is look at those notes.  All I have to do is make a little effort to remember those notes.  Rock ahead.  Ditch ahead.

What Life's About

080831_thousandoaks_l017_2 As human beings living on the face of this earth,  there is a lot that is good.  But there are certain things, certain habits we have that are not so good.  One of the bad habits – just one of the bad habits is that we are so attracted to distractions.

As the name implies, distraction, one would think that you wouldn’t be attracted to it.  But we are.  We love it.  Any minor little distraction, anywhere, and that’s where our attention goes.  And in this life, that’s a bad habit.

Why is it a bad habit?  Because it robs you of the essential things that you need in this life to make this a beautiful occasion.

This is the possibility.  This is what you can do.  You can make one lifetime the most incredible time.

080831_thousandoaks_l014 What happens in a person’s life?   Look at anyone's life.  Even if they are living a most exciting life – exciting.  Excitement.  Bungee jumping.  No, no.  You have to understand – this is what people think is exciting.  To actually challenge death.  "Take me on."   They do.  They think that’s excitement.  Climbing a rock – a vertical rock without any safety lines – just their fingertips.  And powder.  "Take me on."

And the only reason death does not take them on is because death is laughing so hard.  Just, tears running down the face.  Almost to the point of hypoxia – I mean just amazing.  And then death sobers up.  And just like that, they are gone.   They find themselves – not close to nature, but in it.  As their body rots, and becomes dirt again.

So what is it about?  Is it about the excitement?  Or is it about feeling.  About feeling this heart full of joy.

The Joy

Is joy only attainable by human beings? No, no. This is also attainable by a donkey. This is also attainable by a dog. It’s different, but joy is felt by also a dog. I can tell you this. I know. I have witnessed it.

Sadness, too. But the real joy resides in feeling and understanding that infinite that resides inside of you. That’s the part of you that will not age, that is the part of you that will not get old, that is the part of you that is the reality. Away from all the bondage of ideas and concepts. Away from the chains that take a person and make that person a prisoner. Prisoner. The very ideas that these will set you free. This is what freedom means.

But when you have the possibility of being able to go inside, when you have the possibility of being able to understand, when you have the possibility to feel, that is simple by its very nature. Complete by its very nature. Real by its very nature. Infinite by its very nature. And, bringer of joy by its very nature.  Total by its very nature. Away from doubt by its very nature. Understandable by its very nature. No interpretation is required.

The Essence of Infinite

080712s2warsaw_3As we exist in this world, as we function in this world, what really exists? There are issues.  Everybody is surrounded by issues. Good issues, bad issues, good news, bad news. “You have been promoted; you have been fired.” “You have just bought a new car; you have just lost a new car.” Today, you are young. And you look—the same self will look at the mirror and say, “Today, you are old.”

Remember this. It was you—the same self—looked in the mirror and said, “I am so young.” The same self looked in the mirror and said, “I look good.” The same self is going to look in the mirror and proclaim, “I’m getting old.” Same self is going to look in the mirror and say, “I used to be young.” Same mirror. Mirror is mirror. Same self.

080712s2_warsaw_1So, are you not curious, what is this self? Are you not curious to understand your true nature? Are you not curious to understand what is this realm of existence? People talk about liberation, and I wonder. What liberation? This body comes from dust. This is what it came from. These simple elements. And it’ll go back to these elements and it’ll be re-used again and again and again. And again, and again, and again.

And then they go, “But the soul. Your essence will come back.” My essence cannot be separated from the essence of the infinite. It’s one and the same. This is where in me resides the infinite. This body is finite, and what lives inside this finite shell is infinite.

The Best Feeling

_mbw3734 If the focus is here now, then everything makes sense. I’m alive, breath comes into me, I’m conscious, I see, I feel, I understand. And I want to feel full.

Why? Why do you want to feel fulfilled? Why? Does anybody have to explain to you why you want to feel fulfilled? Because you and every person on the face of this earth already knows that when you are fulfilled, it is the best feeling.

In this body, in this shell, which, by the way, is made out of dirt.  Actually, you know earth is made out of dirt, and come to think of it, most of the universe, any solid matter out there seems to be also dirt. Anyway, this dirt, inside of it resides the infinite. What is infinite? Suffice to say, that which was, is, and will be, is a pretty good definition. Suffice to say that it has the capability—something in you has the capability of making this dirt dance, talk, walk, and most importantly, want.

Want. This is the most unique combination. And when this process is taking place, it is called life.  And so far this union is intact, you are alive. And so far you are alive, you can feel. So far, so good? What would you like to feel? What would you like to feel? Somebody said, “Bliss,” somebody said, “Love.”

You know, you can feel both. And much more than that. Not only feel bliss, but feel contentment. Not only feel contentment, but feel joy. Not only feel joy, feel happiness. Not only feel happiness, feel bliss. And many, many more like that. If you could only feel that infinite inside of you. That’s all.

Divinity

080607_satwiwa_sd028 This is the opportunity for every living being to spend some time with the Beloved.

Get to know. Get to understand something. Get to feel. Get to be in gratitude. Get to rejoice. When those things happen, you feel alive. That’s when you begin to live. Everything is such a dance. Such a movement.

The most magnificent movement is the coming and going of this breath. This does not require a scripture to understand. It needs no proof. It needs no buildup. Its divinity is obvious. Is it obvious to you?

Maharaji

Ultimate Kindness

080608s1_albany_p2 Think of life like this: It is your opportunity to spend time with the best friend you ever had.
It is your time.

This chance to be with the ultimate clarity that there is in this whole universe. It is your chance to spend time with the ultimate kindness. It is your chance to spend time with the infinite. It is your chance to spend some time with the ultimate joy.

That’s what a life is. It’s not promised to be forever. But, that possibility exists.  You get to spend time with that that is the most beautiful. And that that resides in your heart.
